🎨 How to Design Your Own Custom Digital Props

Learn how to design and upload your own custom digital props for use in the Curator Live Video Photo Booth App

Updated over 2 weeks ago

Creating digital props has never been easier thanks to our built-in Curator Designer tool. With just a few clicks, you can upload, place, and preview your custom digital props—all from your Curator dashboard.

🆕 This article reflects our updated method using the new web-based Curator Designer.

🧩 What Is a Digital Prop?

A digital prop is a PNG image (with transparent background) that can be overlaid on a guest’s face or body in real time—think sunglasses, hats, beards, or themed accessories. These are used in photo booth and 360 video experiences to create fun, shareable content.

✨ The New Way: Using the Curator Designer Tool

Step 1: Navigate to the Designer

  1. Log into your Curator account

  2. Go to the Assets section

  3. Click Create Digital Prop

This will launch the Curator Designer, a powerful drag-and-drop tool that shows a model with facial placement guides.

Step 2: Upload Your Prop

  • Upload a PNG file with a transparent background

  • Drag and drop the prop onto the model where you'd like it to appear

🎩 For example, place a hat PNG at the top of the model’s head

Step 3: Create Two Components

The designer allows you to define two separate layers:

1. The Prop Placement (Live Experience)

This is where the prop appears during the photo or video experience. Align it properly on the model.

2. The Selector (Preview Icon)

This is the image that appears in the app when users are selecting props. It can be the same as the main prop or completely different (e.g., a simplified icon version).

🖼 Tip: Use a clearer or smaller version of your prop image for the selector if you'd like it to be easier to identify on small screens.

✅ Best Practices

  • Always use transparent PNG files

  • Keep props under 1MB for faster loading

  • Test the placement in the app before going live at an event

  • Create themed prop sets for holidays, branded activations, or special events
