Layout Designer: Build Custom Photo & Video Layouts

Discover how our brand-new Layout Designer lets you build eye-catching photo and video templates in minutes—no pro design skills required.

Updated over a week ago

Our Layout Editor, part of Curator Live, makes it easy to create custom designs for how your photos or videos appear—whether you're printing 2x6 strips, 4x6 postcards with multiple images, or any custom size you need.

What is a Layout?

A layout is a custom canvas that includes one or more image placeholders. Each placeholder will be filled with a photo or video captured during the experience. Layouts determine:

  • The size of the final output (e.g., 2x6, 4x6, square)

  • The position of photos or videos on that output

  • How many photos or videos appear on one design

Layouts are used for printing and/or digital delivery, and they give you full control over the final appearance of your media.

Layout vs. Overlay

It’s important to understand the difference:

  • Layout = The structure your media fits into (includes the actual photo/video within the layout)

  • Overlay = A transparent image or design placed on top of the photo or video, like a frame or branding element

Why Use Layouts?

  • Create photo booth strips, postcards, or custom sizes

  • Add multiple images to a single design (like a 3-photo collage)

  • Control spacing, padding, and composition

  • Combine with overlays for a branded, polished look

How to Use the Layout Editor

  1. Go to your event or template settings.

  2. Click on Layout Editor.

  3. Choose your layout size (2x6, 4x6, square, etc.).

  4. Drag and drop photo/video placeholders where you want them.

  5. Adjust the size and position.

  6. Save your layout and preview it during your test run. For more detailed guidance, refer to the Layout Designer: Build Custom Photo & Video Layouts guide. If you encounter issues, check for common problems like ensuring images have transparent backgrounds in design software or verifying layout settings before saving.

Recent Updates to Layout Features

Curator Live now allows direct creation of layouts for photos, GIFs, boomerangs, and videos on its platform, supporting various media formats. Older templates remain, offering flexibility alongside new customization tools.

Troubleshooting Common Layout Issues

  • Images not displaying after uploading: Ensure the photo layout is saved with a transparent background in design tools like Canva.

  • Error messages for printouts: Check layout settings and replace the "Photo Layout" with a proper photo or navigate to the 'layouts' section on the appropriate page.
