Custom FX Timeline Builder

How to use Custom FX (video)

Updated this week

Follow these simple steps to add a Custom FX (video) experience, pick a video template, and customize it with your own overlay, background, and audio.

1) Add the Custom FX experience

  • Page 3 → Experiences: choose CUSTOM FX.

2) Open the Timeline Builder

  • Page 4 → Assets: you’ll see the Video Timeline Builder.

3) Choose a starting template

  • Click TEMPLATES.

  • The Curator Custom FX Video Templates gallery opens.

  • Select the template you want to use.

4) Add your overlay

  • In the Timeline, click the OVERLAY layer.

  • Scroll down and click UPLOAD to add your overlay (PNG recommended).

  • Make sure the OVERLAY layer is the same length as the video (drag the layer edge to match the full timeline if needed).

5) Keep sizes consistent (important)

All sizes must match for a clean result:

  • Recording Size

  • Composition Size

  • Overlay Size

  • Background Size

If anything looks stretched or cropped, your asset size/aspect ratio doesn’t match the composition. Adjust the asset or composition so they’re the same.

6) Add Background or Audio (optional)

  • To add a new asset, double-click an empty layer area in the timeline.

  • In the pop-up, choose the asset type from the dropdown (Background or Audio).

  • After it appears in the timeline, select the asset, scroll down to UPLOAD, and add your file.

  • Match the length of the new asset to the full video by extending the layer to the end.

Quick Tips

  • Overlay format: Use transparent PNG for best results.

  • Aspect ratio: Keep everything the same (e.g., 1080×1920 vertical or 1920×1080 horizontal).

  • Audio: If the audio stops early, extend the Audio layer to match the composition length.

  • Template length: If the video ends too soon, extend the Composition or shorten layers so everything lines up.

  • Keep layers lean: Each additional asset (overlay, background, audio) increases processing time and memory use—especially on older iPads.

  • Aim for ~10 seconds: Longer recordings take significantly longer to process and can cause lag or memory-related crashes. Always test on your device before going live.
